While the ultra lux Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance may be this past weekend’s most renowned event, the entire week is stuffed with games and distractions for the stupendously wealthy. That includes the Gooding Auctions on Sunday, the Quail Gathering on Friday and perhaps the most entertaining of them all the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Saturday. Think of priceless vintage cars racing around the track at Laguna Seca — it’s like the whole weekend is the San Diego Comic Con for the 1%. After watching a 1957 Ford Thunderbird dueling with a 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta and a 1958 Peerless AmBro, GM made a surprise move and debuted their Corvette Racing C7.R racecar. While thousands in attendance watched in awe, a black-and-white camouflaged C7.R — based on the all-new 2014 C7 Corvette Stingray — did two laps around the storied raceway with Corvette Racing driver Tommy Milner behind the wheels. Although strictly a track car, the CR.7 is of interest to the common man because some of its advanced aero work — front splitters, side rockers, rear diffusers, enlarged front air openings and hood air extractor — may actually find their way in some form to the C7 Corvette’s inevitable high performance models. Can’t wait. The un-disguised C7.R will make its much anticipated racing debut at the Rolex 24 in Daytona Beach, Florida on January 26, 2014.
